If you’ve spent any time looking for travel inspiration lately, you’ve probably noticed a shift.

A few years ago, Santorini was everywhere. It was the dream destination. Whitewashed buildings, blue domes, infinity pools overlooking the caldera and sunsets that looked almost too perfect to be real.

Now, the conversation sounds a little different.

“It’s too busy.”

“It’s too expensive.”

“It’s just for Instagram.”

And while there’s some truth in those comments, they don’t tell the whole story.

The reality is that Santorini has become a victim of its own success. When a place becomes one of the most photographed destinations in the world, expectations become almost impossible to live up to. Add in millions of visitors every year and it’s easy to understand why opinions have started to change.

But popularity doesn’t automatically make somewhere overrated.

Some places become famous because they’re genuinely extraordinary, and Santorini is one of them.

Few destinations are as instantly recognisable. The dramatic cliffs rising above the Aegean Sea, the white villages clinging to the edge of the caldera and the sunsets that draw people together every evening create a landscape that’s unlike anywhere else in Greece.

That’s why people keep coming back.

The mistake many travellers make is expecting Santorini to be a quiet Greek island.

It isn’t.

If you’re looking for empty beaches and sleepy fishing villages in the middle of August, you’ll probably be disappointed. That’s simply not what Santorini offers.

What it does offer is one of the most spectacular settings in the Mediterranean, incredible restaurants with unforgettable views, boutique hotels carved into the cliffs and the chance to wander streets that have inspired travellers for decades.

Like any popular destination, timing makes a difference.

Visit in the height of summer and you’ll be sharing those famous viewpoints with plenty of other people. Travel in late spring or early autumn and the experience often feels completely different. The weather is still beautiful, the sea is warm and there’s a little more space to enjoy everything the island has to offer.

It’s also worth looking beyond the handful of places that dominate social media.

Oia may steal the headlines, but it’s only one part of the island. Explore villages like Pyrgos or Emporio, spend an afternoon at a local winery or take a boat trip around the caldera and you’ll discover another side of Santorini that many visitors miss.

Perhaps the biggest question isn’t whether Santorini is worth visiting.

It’s whether expectations have become unrealistic.

No destination can promise deserted streets when it’s one of the world’s most recognisable islands. No sunset can feel like a private moment when thousands of people have travelled to watch it. Judging Santorini by those standards almost guarantees disappointment.

Judge it for what it is, though, and it’s much easier to understand why it continues to capture people’s imagination.

Not every famous destination deserves the attention it gets.

Santorini just happens to be one that does.

So before you cross it off your list because someone online called it overrated, remember this.

Sometimes the places everyone talks about are the ones that stay with people for a reason.
